i really need to know. and till now i only have rubbish 'whatever there is in the kitchen, half of it will enter the pan' recipes.
and mr. google gives too much info.
I've been toying with the idea of revamping orchestrate too, but I kind of promised myself I wouldn't get involved in web2.0-for-the-sake-of-it projects in my personal time anymore. I became very cynical about these trendy productivity-based apps; I mean, they are great to build as you get lots of feedback because the kind of people who use them are in general heavy web users who have blogs etc to talk about the newest, coolest app they discovered; but beyond the initial hype period the traffic just trails off because people get bored of the new gimmick. So then you just build another to build up more hype for yourself. It's a self-perpetuating cycle. I think people like you are rare - those who continue to use the web2.0 service. See this post for a humorous take on this sentiment...
http://www.uncov.com/2007/12/20/pownce-is-still...
I do think Orchestrate tackles a problem in an *interesting* way, but I don't think it solves the problem completely. I don't think any of these task managers do. I use rememberthemilk because my friends do, but I don't particularly like the service and don't go back to it to keep track of my tasks. Perhaps the problem is I've realised I'm not even a very task-oriented person; I believe I waste more time trying to manage my tasks under some made-up system that worked for someone else, than actually just doing them as-and-when I feel like it and when they come to mind. Sounds a bit chaotic, but I think I work better that way. I think more energy and task-completing-time gets wasted by trying to manage all this data; more than would be spent just getting stuff done.
That's kind of how I feel about the topic - perhaps there's a worthwhile blog post in all of this.
If I could create a solution that I truly wanted to use, then maybe I'd think about revamping Orchestrate too.
The other point however is that, if I started to spend real time on Orchestrate, it would have to have a direction and fit into my overall strategy. The days of me just churning out apps for the hell of it are gone; now I have less time and more maturity - things I build and really spend time on have to fit with a proper life strategy, and OSF2 is one part of the puzzle that will slowly be put together this year. Currently, productivity apps don't really fit into that long-term strategy. There's a number of reasons for that, a big one being motivation (I'm way more into food than I am into productivity), the other is financial viability - as a simple example, I can sell highly targeted ads on OSF because everyone is there for the same reason. On a productivity app, the advertising model doesn't work as well because different users will be engaged by different things (and do you want ads in your task list? ew no thanks). You may cynically look down your nose at me for thinking about the costs and potential gains of what I've created, but it's something I have to think about - like I said as I go grey and mature I'm no longer interested in pumping out app after app seeking blogosphere fame, I've been-there-done-that and am now interested in something that I can build and sustain and keep going indefinitely; and to do that I simply have to think about the long term financial viability as well as my motivational commitment.
Food is where it's at, for me. I love the stuff.
I'm not so sure - it's not a very well-put-together app. I don't really want to advertise that I made it, unless I were to revamp it completely. In case you haven't realised, I'm very finicky, have ridiculously high standards and am a total bitch to work with (which is why 99% of the time I work alone).
Show me around Tokyo in April when I'm over to see friends!
Of course, not many users may think of it that way, and that's another issue -- if popular recipes are there by virtue of simply looking nice, what good is "vote" to people actually looking for workable, tasty recipes?
What might make sense though is if you can filter your votes with some granularity. So once you have voted on something you can maybe go back to it later in your vote list and give it something extra, like a "tried it, loved it" badge or something. Then you'd be able to filter all your votes by just the ones you've voted, or the ones you've actually made.
The same applies to the Recent Comments vs. Recently Popular Recipes...it just feels a bit unbalanced too. With the 2 thumbnails per row and then 3 per row ...
Hope you get my constructive comment :) Other than that, OSF Rocks!
But I just noticed that we can no longer post suggestions? I remember we used to be able to choose between posting a comment or a suggestion for each recipe.
replying to a suggestion and accidentally putting it in the regular
comments. if you want to suggest something, just write a comment -
keeps things nice and simple. I *may* beef up the comments thread
with icons or something so you can flag your comment as different
types (suggestion etc) but I won't be going back to the old two-column
layout.
Just a question...
How do we edit our details, like our website and headshot, etc?
the next couple of days
BTW - I came to the blog wanting to ask how I bookmark recipes I want to come back to...I guess that is what the vote system does. It just wasn't clear or intuitive, but now I know...maybe a tooltip or sub note explaining it would help.
I realized some days ago that I couldn“t delete recipes or drafts from my page anymore. As I store my recipe ideas there and later change my mind and don.t want to risk the recipe not appearing as a new addition as my draft is already months old, I just would like to get rid of some of these drafts. Another funny or buggy thing is the fact that the number of pages I can click through from my recipes is limited to the number of pages I have of published recipes(not logged in). This means I cannot edit old recipes or drafts which would appear on a higher page number. I hope this makes some sense. Anyway, great work!!!!
1) when you publish a draft, it is timestamped with the current time,
regardless of when you first saved the draft. so it will still show up as a
new recipe. however yes, there should be the ability to delete the draft -
I'll put a button in.
2) ooh - a bug! well spotted. I'll fix it in the morning...just about to
go to bed now..........
Cheers
Jon
Also is there a way to get rid of old votes. I voted one star for a few in the original, but now it's kind of cluttering the ones I want to go back and try.
One thing though - when I clicked the link for "terms" on the registration page, all it did was reload that same page, instead of opening any kind of popup for terms. Obviously I was capable of clicking the "Terms of Use" link at the bottom of the page (and that worked just fine), but I thought you'd like to know. I'm using Safari, if that makes a difference.
I'm really looking forward to using it :) Really, really good job.
Except I can't really because I hit upon a snag. I can't type in the "ingredients" box but I can in the "method" box. Instead of the white text background, it's all brushed-aluminum looking.
My browser is Opera 9.5 beta. =(
My wife suggests a simple feature to convert between US and Metric measuring system (when inserting ingredients at least) ?
I want to add a bunch of recipes I use, and then the next time I make them, add the picture and post to OSF. I'm sure a lot of other people want to do the same.
I like the simplification of the rating system, but wish there was a way to "unvote". I now have some recipes I voted low in the earlier system listed in my "Voted" page.
+1 for allowing drafts to be saved without pictures...I've been using drafts to remind myself to make the recipes so I can take the pictures.
In the new version btw search is not doing the job it is supposed to.
Example : searching for "momo" didn't return "momos"(http://www.opensourcefood.com/people/Lex/recipes/steamed-chicken-momos).
Hope you already know this.
Thanks,
SA
Few things I'm think about for this site:
- Besides a list of recipes you voted for, how about a list of people that voted for your recipe? Also if we can see the number of votes each recipe has....well maybe I'm just being too nosy.
- Can we remove our votes?
- Although I love cooking, I also love looking at food!!! Can there be a view of each person's recipe picture is a sort of slide show view or something?
- Is there a way we can post general question not related to any specific recipe?
Again great job!
Please continue maintaining this site :)
I'm a terrible cook with little imagination and so I love recipe websites that can help me. However, nothing has ever had all the features I can imagine being useful, an API that might allow me to add features would be great.
http://www.opensourcefood.com/people/reinarama/...
Said "License: All Rights Reserved". This seems... incongruous?
This would be great so I don't have to clutter my bookmarks/delicious with a ton more links!
I think getting results that only contain those things is more useful than results that contain one or the other.
just two suggestions from a first impression...
some sort of bookmarking tool would be useful w/in the site, so that you do not have to rely on sites like delicious, etc. like on yelp! where you are able to bookmark things that you want to try, but don't want to leave on the screen.
also, another suggestion is perhaps a way to EXPORT the recipes into a txt file or a button that creates a printer-friendly version of the recipe... then i don't have to mess w/ cutting and pasting and it would be possible to organize and lay out an entire meal w/o bringing the laptop near the kitchen!!
looks great, thanks!!!
Thanks!
I really like your site, and I have some questions and or functionality wishes. :)
I just list everything that comes to mind, maybe alot of stuff that you already thought of (I actually had the idea of doing a site like yours for many years and have thought alot about it).
If if it truly is open source, you should be able to patch recipes with other recipes, for ex, taking a spicemix recipe and add it as an ingrediennt for your recipes. Also you should be able to, remix, evolve on recipes, and that they are linked on the original recipe somehow. Kind of like how youtube does it.
Would be nice with a feature to recalculate the amount of ingrediens for more or less servings and also then have a serving info on each recipie.
I think you should be able to vote down on a recipe if it really turns out bad, because in that way people can see if a recipe is bad and not just see it as neutral. People could think nobody tried it or that they thought it was "ok" but not good enough for a vote up, but with thumbs down your able to see if a recipe really sucks. You could also use it to filter out real crap and get rid of spam/not serious recipes. I therefore don't think it's the best with only thumbs up.
Internationalisation, including unit changes. I for ex, don't live in the US. You could also have a unit-converter.
Tagsearching so that you can search after some ingridiens you have at home and get up recipes that includes them.
Feature for making a shopinglist of selected recipes, a week-planner, people could enter prices for ingridients (based on nation then), you could then get a sort of calculation about how pricy the recipe is and you can add that as a search feature (but it could also work with a tag for that ofcourse) etc.
Maybe a mobile version, or that you atleast can see a shoping-list-view in your mobile? Would be nice when your shopping.
Different pre-added search options for different allergens, or food that you don't want to eat (for ex meat, alcohol etc). You could ofcourse have a filter-out-tag option for registered users so that they can hand pick. You say that this filter option is added, but I somehow don't find it.
I mini-wiki for every ingridiens would be nice, like the way last.fm has it for artists, people could add information about where the ingridient is available to get for ex.
Pages for different cooking techniques could be added, and then linked from recipes.
Option for adding the time required per recipe, should also then be searhcable ofcourse.
Food/chef groups with a forum (like last.fm) would be nice.
You could also add nutritional info. There is free programs that does this and looks up the data from the US FDA Nutritonal Data (for example Gourmet for GNOME)
My own vision for a site like this was to have a nice peer-to-peer platform for recipes and recipe development, an easy way for people to help out and develop specific recipes based on old recipe code or new one, add patches, join together in groups, and maybe in the end be able to home fabricate (decentralize production) advanced food (based on other peoples parts) that people could produce and sell with the opensource recipe on the label (or a link), and also assemble opensource cook books for print and for selling. It could autonomize food production and help educate people on how to cook. Not only be a source of free & open source recipes on the web but also a possibility for open foodstuff versions of fabricated products that can be made locally and sold to help grow the local economy. People in a community could join a group and help together to adobt recipes to their locally grown crops, make their own foddstuffs, sell or trade them... You get the picture :)
I wonder if your code is free & opensource and what license it's released under?
What does egg & co has to do with the site?
I think it's a bit sad that you use commercials, but maybe that's needed to work out the economic bit. You could opt for donations, and also add donations for personal chefs (you could get a small procentage of the sum).
THANX FOR A GREAT SITE! :)
