    Road to Perdition?

You should try James Newton Howard's "Signs". The entire score is based around a three-note motif and it's brilliant in its simplicity.

And by the way, Batman Begins was co-composed by James Newton Howard, so give credit where credit's due (although that particular cue seems to be full-on Zimmer).

Lisa Gerrard's amazing score and of course, ethereal voice on "Whalerider". Check it!
  • Andrew · 1 year ago
There Will Be Blood? Or is that still too new to make it into this sort of list?
  • Alan · 1 year ago
Pirates of the Caribbean had a good soundtrack. Also, I agree with you, Shaolin Soccer is made of all types of win.
  • yongfook · 1 year ago
Oh good one - Pirates of the Caribbean was definitely a great
soundtrack. I totally loved that - you could hear the yo ho ho
piratey goodness. Fit the movie perfectly.

    Big Trouble in Little China.
    &
    Remo Williams.

lol - both cheezy, action 80's adventures.
  • yongfook · 1 year ago
I can't remember the soundtrack of either - were they really that memorable?
  • John · 1 year ago
I concur on the shaolin soccer.
  • TiKa · 1 year ago
Shaolin Soccer! Gotta love that movie! Awesome.

Soundtrack huh.. I love so many soundtracks, but they're just typical.

The Fountain song was good. I like those kind of songs though, but I never heard of that movie. When was it out?
  • TiKa · 1 year ago
Oh, one of my favorite OST is from Ang Lee's latest movie, Lust, Caution. Like somebody mention above, Lord of the Ring and Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • John · 1 year ago
Try the Infernal Affair Trilogy OSTs youll like them.
  • kiki · 1 year ago
Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy: I know it's not a movie but the music is absolutely orgasmic.
  • yongfook · 1 year ago
ahh...Top 5 Game Soundtracks is a whoooole other blog post..heh.
  • Andy Lann · 1 year ago
And I'm beginning to think that Age of Conan will rule them all. It beats most of the movie soundtracks I've heard.
  • kiki · 1 year ago
to see that music performed live is nothing short of life-changing
  • yongfook · 1 year ago
I went to the Final Fantasy concert once, in Japan.

    Was amazing.
  • kiki · 1 year ago
this may sound silly, but i was so moved by the music, i was brought to tears...

Solaris soundtrack - Clint Mansell is better than The Fountain in my opinion. Also no Morricone? The Mission? Blade Runner? And as far as Hans Zimmer - The Thin Red Line?
  • kiki · 1 year ago
ok. got another, more fitting with the discussion: John Corigliano: The Red Violin
  • Emily · 1 year ago
Requiem for a Dream - Clint Mansell and Kronos Quartet
    Amélie - Yann Tiersen
    Hero - Tan Dun

All perfectly complimented the movie and are delightful on their own.

I'll definitely be checking out The Fountain.
  • yongfook · 1 year ago
those are all excellent suggestions - I have all of them in my iTunes :)
  • ShaolinTiger · 1 year ago
Shaolin Soccer is quite possibly...one of the BEST MOVIES EVAR!

Can't believe you missed out Team America OST.

One of my favs was Replacement Killers.
  • scotty · 1 year ago
    Michael Collins

    hands down, winner.
  • chimp · 1 year ago
i really adore the mark mothersborough/wes anderson collaborations (life aquatic, royal tennenbaums), i think the OST falls into the same realms as the films - original, quirky and poetic. all good stuff! anyone who makes bill muray dance to electro is a winner.

also the spanish master alberto iglesias (teamed with pedro almodovar )... in particular the Talk To Her OST

(but neither have that epic soundtrack-y quality from most of the clips in your post...)

    Scarface, no..?

The Legends of The Fall OST by James Horner.

Watched the movie when I was 17, left me in a total daze for days...and when I listen to the OST, it captures the essence of the movie perfectly...and transports me back to the movie immediately.

OST has peaks of highs and lows - themes of sadness & triumphant-ness nicely blended in it - PLUS some elements of surprise and mystery >>> just the way I like it.

I have to be biased - it's the first OST that I felt really tied in with the whole movie...and therefore, no other OST (IMHO) will ever match it or even come close to it.

Concur with previous comments, as well as:

Dragonheart OST by Randy Edelman - THE epitome of fantasy/dragon/fairytale type themes imho.

Nightmare Before Christmas OST - Randy Edelman - ok so it's not exactly 100% classical/orchestral, but it gets my #1 for quirkyness.

    Edward Scissorhands (also Randy Elfman)
  • areya · 1 year ago
Oops. Danny Elfman, not Randy Edelman/Elfman. Can't type >_<""

    Ashes of Time OST
  • yongfook · 1 year ago
damn I forgot to give an honourable mention to Munich, by John Williams - great stuff with the delicate folk guitars and thick violins, with that all-important theme.
  • janbee88 · 1 year ago
My new favorite track is A Series of Unfortunate Events. Cheers for Thomas Newman!

"Not those compilations of pop songs and whatnot that are slung together and called soundtracks">>>if I may allow to say my piece on these "compilations"...

"Hackers" and "The Saint" get my vote.
I mean, come on, everytime I hear Orbital's Halcyon & On & On, I immediately remember the scene when Jonny Lee Miller looks out of his plane seat forlornly. And I adore their (Orbital) version of The Saint's theme. Very sexxxxy. :)
  • DrRogg · 1 year ago
Oh dear, late to the party as ever, Rogg. Anyway, will throw up a quick vote for Bear McCreary's score for the Battlestar Galactica remake. Apart from having this amazing Indian-rock fusion version of All Along The Watchtower, I haven't had such wonderful use of a gamelan siiiiiiince Akira.

    *chime*Akiiiiira!

this is kinda late, but i loved gattaca's ost and the cider house rules'
